Volcano Classic FAQs

What temperature is each number on the Volcano Classic dial?

The dial reads 1 to 9 rather than degrees. Storz & Bickel map those as roughly 130°C at 1, 178°C at 5 and 226°C at 9, and note the real figure swings about 5°C either way as the heat exchanger cycles. Our temperature guide covers where to start.

Should I use the Easy Valve or the Solid Valve?

Both fit. The Easy Valve ships in the box and its balloon and mouthpiece are consumables you replace rather than clean; its wider chamber bore and fewer metal parts also mean less condensation. The Solid Valve strips down and rebuilds completely, but needs more maintenance.

How long does a balloon last, and how many fills per chamber?

Storz & Bickel ask for a fresh Easy Valve balloon and mouthpiece every two weeks, kept to one person. One chamber load fills several balloons, and the manual suggests tipping the material out and grinding it again between them.

When should I change the air filter?

Twist the cap on the underside anticlockwise every four weeks and inspect the pad. It filters the room air the pump draws in, and is replaced rather than washed.

How is the Volcano Classic different from the Volcano Hybrid?

The Classic is electromechanical: an analog dial, two rocker switches, a 100 W heater, balloon filling only. The Volcano Hybrid adds single degree control from 40°C, an app, a tube for direct draw, a 270 W heater and a 30 minute auto shut-off.

Is a used Volcano Digit a sensible alternative?

The Digit put a digital display on the same hot air generator and sold from 2007 to 2020. Storz & Bickel have ended service and repair support for it, while the Classic is still made and serviced.

What warranty does the Volcano Classic come with?

Two years as standard, with a third if you register within four weeks of purchase, though several countries are excluded. Wear parts such as the feet are not covered, nor is moisture damage.

Volcano Classic Cleaning & Maintenance

Everything on the Volcano Classic that gets dirty lifts straight off the hot air outlet. The base holds a heat exchanger, a pump and an analog dial and never meets vapor, so the residue all collects in the filling chamber and whichever valve set you own.

  1. Brush the screens after each balloon: Storz & Bickel ask that you clear them with the supplied brush after every session. Their troubleshooting table blames plant particles in the balloon on a screen that is clogged or out of its notch.

  2. Cool it first: Flip both rocker switches off, unplug, and let the filling chamber and cap lose their heat. Only the textured grip is safe to hold sooner.

  3. Open the Easy Valve cap: Push the upper screen downwards with the cleaning brush handle, then drive the cap cylinder down out of the cap housing. The cap ring strips off as it goes.

  4. Split the Easy Valve chamber: Push the lower screen up out of the filling chamber cylinder, then the cylinder up out of its housing. Three filling chamber clips drop loose from the housing foot, so work over a tray.

  5. Strip the Solid Valve: Pull the lip piece off the mouthpiece cylinder, then that cylinder out of its housing. Undo the slipring, lift the balloon away with its balloon fixation ring, push the valve cylinder up and unscrew the valve cap. Stiff threads free up in warm water; the filling chamber ring needs tweezers.

  6. Choose one solvent: 70% isopropyl on paper or cotton cloths, or warm water with dishwashing liquid. Plastic parts must not sit in isopropyl beyond half an hour, or they discolor and turn brittle.

  7. Dishwasher rules: Chamber and cap parts take the machine, as do the Solid Valve mouthpiece, valve and chamber. Keep the screens, cap ring, filling chamber clips and small insert parts out, since they are easily lost in there.

  8. Balloons are consumables: The Easy Valve balloon and mouthpiece are never cleaned. Swap them fortnightly, keep one balloon to one person, and clean the chamber before fitting a fresh set. On the Solid Valve, the balloon gets replaced whenever the valve is cleaned.

  9. Check the air filter: Every four weeks, twist the air filter cap on the underside anticlockwise and inspect the pad behind it.

The generator itself only ever meets a dry cloth, damp at most. Never immerse or steam it, and if it does get wet the manufacturer wants it checked before you power it up again. Treat the analog dial as a range, not a set point: level 6 spans roughly 185 to 195°C as the heat exchanger cycles. On reassembly, seat the upper screen back in its notch.
