PAX 2

The PAX 2 pulls vapor from a stainless steel oven in the base of the device up a long internal channel to the mouthpiece at the top, so residue collects along a path you cannot take apart or even see. Almost every complaint about tight draw or scorched flavor on this device traces back to a clogged oven screen or a gummed up vapor path rather than the heater itself.

1. Let it cool completely: The oven and body stay hot for several minutes after a session, so wait before handling anything.

2. Empty the oven: Push one side of the magnetic oven lid and lift it off the base, then clear spent material out of the chamber with the wire brush or a pipe cleaner from the maintenance kit. Doing this while the oven is still warm after a session is easier, since the residue has not hardened yet.

3. Remove the mouthpiece: Both the flat and raised mouthpieces are food grade silicone and pull straight up off the top of the device.

4. Floss the vapor path: Dip a pipe cleaner in isopropyl alcohol, feed it into the mouthpiece opening and work it back and forth through the channel. Pushing it all the way through also pops the oven screen loose from the oven end.

5. Soak the screen and mouthpieces: Put the oven screen and the silicone mouthpieces in a dish of isopropyl for about an hour. PAX is explicit that the oven lid and the half pack lid must never go into any liquid, and the same applies to the body, since alcohol reaching the battery or heater will kill the device.

6. Swab the oven and top face: Use cotton buds dampened with isopropyl on the inside of the oven, the top of the device around the mouthpiece seat, and the underside of the lid. Wipe the magnetic charging contacts with a dry bud only.

7. Dry and reseat: Everything must be bone dry before reassembly. Lay the end of the screen furthest from the vapor path opening in first, lower the rest flat, and press the centre with a cotton bud until it sits snug. Refit the lid and mouthpiece, then run one empty cycle at the highest setting to clear any alcohol traces.

PAX recommends cleaning every few uses. Screens are a consumable: replace one that stays dark after a soak, and the standard flat screens sold in three packs also fit the PAX 3, Mini and Plus. The battery is internal and charges through the magnetic USB dock in roughly two and a half hours, so keep the contact pins clear of debris or the dock will not seat properly.
