Cipher Herby

The Herby has a short vapor path, so the mouthpiece screen collects resin long before the ceramic chamber looks dirty. There are only three parts to worry about: the chamber, the mouthpiece with its screen, and the insulating tips. Two spare screens ship in the box because the screen is the part that eventually stops responding to brushing.

Quick Cleaning (After Each Session)

1. Let it cool first: The ceramic chamber sits directly under the mouthpiece and holds heat for a minute or two after a session.
2. Empty the chamber or pod: Tip out the spent load while it is still warm, when it lifts away cleanly. Pods empty into the bin and go back in the container.
3. Brush the chamber: Sweep the ceramic walls with the included brush. The chamber is narrow, so work the bristles around the edge rather than pushing straight down.
4. Wipe the mouthpiece screen: Brush the screen so air can pull through. A tight draw on the Herby almost always means a loaded screen.

Deeper Cleaning (Every Few Sessions)

1. Pull the mouthpiece off: It lifts away from the top of the body, exposing the screen beneath it.
2. Take the insulating tip out: Cipher says the tips push in firmly, so pull them straight rather than twisting. They can be washed in hot soapy water or dipped briefly in isopropyl alcohol.
3. Soak the mouthpiece and screen: Give them 20 to 30 minutes in isopropyl, then rinse under warm water and dry completely before refitting.
4. Swab the chamber: Dip a cotton swab in isopropyl and wipe the ceramic walls with the Herby held upside down, so nothing drips toward the heater below.
5. Swap the screen when brushing stops working: Two replacement mouthpiece screens are included. Fit a fresh one rather than fighting a screen that is fully glazed over.
6. Run one empty cycle: Heat the Herby at the top setting with nothing loaded until any alcohol smell has gone, then let it cool before your next load.

Care Tips for Better Results

• Cipher asks for a medium fine grind, in the pods and in the chamber. See our grind guide.

The Herby is aimed at people who want the smallest sensible thing they can carry and are happy to accept fixed settings in exchange. At 40 grams and 90mm tall it disappears in a pocket, which puts it alongside the most discreet dry herb vaporizers and makes it easy to justify as a second device for travel. The pod system is the real argument for it. Loading three pods at home means you never carry a grinder, and because the herb sits in the pod rather than against the ceramic, the chamber stays cleaner than it would otherwise. Cipher's own dosing pod approach works the same way capsules do on larger devices.

The trade-offs are the ones you would expect at sixty dollars. Three presets from 380°F to 420°F means the lowest setting is already warm, so there is no gentle flavour run at the bottom of the range and no way to tune between steps.
