Cipher NOVA

Cipher NOVA Overview
The Cipher NOVA is an electric smoking pipe, not a vaporizer, and Cipher is clear about that. Its heating system is a dual arc lighter that ignites the load directly, so what you inhale is smoke from combustion rather than vapor. Cipher's own comparison article puts it plainly: an electric pipe "uses a built-in arc lighter or heating element to combust flower directly, delivering a traditional smoking experience without an external flame". If you want the difference explained from the other side, our guide on what a dry herb vaporizer is and how it works covers it.
Key Features & Benefits of the Cipher NOVA
Taken on its own terms it is a well thought out pipe. Flower goes into a glazed ceramic pod that drops into the stainless steel body behind a magnetic mouthpiece, and the kit ships with seven pods and two smell proof containers so several can be filled in advance. The arc is fully enclosed, so there is no visible flame and no wind to fight, and Cipher says the restricted airflow through the pod makes it self extinguishing between draws rather than burning down like a bowl. One button controls everything, and the 1000mAh cell is rated for over 100 hits per charge with a USB-C recharge in about an hour. The 130mm by 20mm body is closer to a pen than a pipe in the pocket, which is most of its appeal.

Is the Cipher NOVA a vaporizer?
No. Cipher lists the heating system as a dual arc lighter and describes the NOVA throughout as an electric smoking pipe. The arc ignites the flower, so it produces smoke through combustion rather than vapor. Cipher's own comparison article says electric pipes "cannot match" the temperature control of a vaporizer because nothing is electronically regulated.
How do the NOVA pods work?
Ground flower goes into a glazed ceramic pod, and the pod drops into the body behind the magnetic mouthpiece. The kit includes seven pods and two smell proof containers, so several can be filled ahead of time. Cipher says the pod's restricted airflow makes the load self extinguishing between draws, rather than burning down on its own.
How many hits does a NOVA charge give?
Cipher rates the internal 1000mAh cell at over 100 hits per charge, measured with the arc running for three seconds per hit. A full recharge over USB-C takes about an hour. The battery is not user replaceable.
What is the difference between the NOVA V2 and V3?
Both list the same specifications and both sell for $120. Cipher has moved stainless steel and carbon black to the V3 and discontinued the iridescent V2 finish. At the time of writing Cipher's site notes the V3 changeover is still in progress, so stock at retailers can be either version.
Can the Cipher NOVA be used with a bong or hookah?
Yes, through separate accessories. Cipher sells a bubbler attachment, a water pipe adapter, a hookah kit and a glass water hookah kit that turn the same body into a bowl, bong or hookah. None of them are included in the base kit.
How do you take the NOVA apart to clean it?
The mouthpiece breaks away from a magnet with sideways pressure. The pod housing uses a 90 degree twist lock, so twist it a quarter turn and then apply sideways pressure to reach the arc lighter. On reassembly, twist the housing so that CIPHER or NOVA lines up vertically with the button.
Does the NOVA work with concentrates?
Cipher publishes a separate guide for using concentrates in the NOVA, but the base kit and the pods are set up for flower. Treat concentrate use as an extra rather than something the standard kit is built around.
What does the Cipher NOVA warranty cover?
One year from purchase against defects in materials and workmanship, with registration and proof of purchase required. Cipher specifically voids the warranty if the arc lighter is used for anything other than the NOVA, and excludes drops, liquid damage, cosmetic marks and normal battery degradation.

Cipher NOVA Cleaning & Maintenance
Because the NOVA burns rather than vaporizes, it produces ash as well as resin, and the two collect in different places. Cipher's own how to guide names three areas: the air path through the mouthpiece, the ceramic pods, and the arc nodes at the top of the battery module. Ash on the arc nodes is the usual reason a NOVA stops lighting, and a clogged stir tool is the usual reason the draw goes tight.
Quick Cleaning (After Each Session)
- Blow the pod out: Take the spent pod out and blow through the hole in its base. Cipher says doing this every time clears most of the residue before it sets.
- Blow back through the mouthpiece: While the resin is still warm it pushes out easily. Cipher suggests covering the stir tool with a napkin first, since the resin stains.
- Clear the arc nodes: Twist the pod housing a quarter turn, pull it off the battery module, and blow across the arc nodes to shift loose ash. The brush handles anything the breath does not.
- Check the pod base before reloading: If the holes in the bottom are blocked, the arc cannot reach the material and the pod will not light properly.
Deeper Cleaning (Every Few Sessions)
- Soak the mouthpiece weekly: Cipher recommends at least one hour in 91 percent isopropyl alcohol, at least once a week, to clear the stir tool slots and the internal air path.
- Strip the mouthpiece for a deep clean: It comes apart into four pieces. Hold the stir tool and turn the mouthpiece counterclockwise, slowly, so the spring does not fly out. A spare spring ships in the accessories box for when it does.
- Soak the pods: Drop them in hot soapy water and swirl to loosen the residue, or give them at least 30 minutes in 91 percent isopropyl for a deeper clean. Wipe the inside with a cotton bud, rinse under hot water and dry.
- Brush the arc nodes, do not wet them: The surface around the nodes is glazed ceramic, and Cipher specifically says not to use any cleaning solution there. Brush gently across the needles instead.
- Reassemble in the right orientation: Refit the mouthpiece, then twist the pod housing back on so that either NOVA or CIPHER lines up vertically with the button, or the arc will not fire into the pod.
Care Tips for Better Results
- Use ground material and fill pods no more than three quarters full. A tightly packed pod restricts airflow and stops the arc lighting properly.
- Always rotate the mouthpiece tip clockwise when stirring. Counterclockwise unscrews the stir tool.
- If you get airflow but no smoke, the arc nodes, the housing alignment or an overpacked pod are the three things Cipher tells you to check.
- Keep a couple of clean pods in the smell proof container so a dirty one can go straight into the soak rather than back into use.

Learn More About Cipher NOVA
The NOVA suits someone who smokes and wants to keep smoking, but without papers, a lighter or an open bowl. Nothing here is aimed at the reasons people usually buy a vaporizer. There is no temperature control, no extraction efficiency to talk about and no terpene preservation, because the arc combusts the load the moment you press the button. What it does offer is immediacy and discretion: no heat up wait, no visible flame, no ash to drop, and a sealed pod that works in wind. Cipher's own writing on the subject is unusually honest that vaporizers win on toxin exposure and herb efficiency, and that the pipe wins on simplicity, which our guide on going from smoke to vapor looks at from the other direction. The pod system also makes it good for small, controlled amounts, which is closer to a single hit device than a session vaporizer.
The trade-offs matter more than usual here, so be clear about them before buying. You are still inhaling combustion smoke, with all of the carbon monoxide and particulates that come with it, so none of the health arguments for switching to vaporizing apply. It also burns through material faster than a vaporizer at the same dose. Practically, the arc lighter is the wear part and Cipher voids the warranty if it is used for anything other than the NOVA, the pods need periodic cleaning, and the iridescent V2 finish has been discontinued while stainless steel and carbon black continue as the V3. If the appeal is the shape and the pocket size rather than the combustion, look at the most discreet dry herb vaporizers instead.
