To use a Volcano, heat the base to your chosen temperature, fit a chamber of ground herb onto the hot air outlet, run the pump for about five seconds, then push an Easy Valve balloon onto the chamber and let it fill about halfway. Switch the pump off, lift the chamber and balloon off together, pull the balloon free, click the mouthpiece on and inhale slowly. Finish the bag within ten minutes, then refill from the same load at a slightly higher temperature. On a Volcano Hybrid you can skip the balloon and draw through the tube instead.

We have not reviewed a Volcano on this site. Everything below comes from Storz & Bickel's instructions for use for both machines (on its downloads page), its support center, and the parts research behind our guide to the best Volcano accessories.

Volcano Hybrid vs Volcano Classic: The Controls

Both push room air through a heater and up through the herb in a separate filling chamber. The Volcano Hybrid adds a digital readout, a tube and Bluetooth; the Volcano Classic has a dial and two rocker switches. In our October 2 price check the Hybrid was $699 at most stores and the Classic $479 to $499.

Easy Valve or Solid Valve

An Easy Valve balloon is a bag, valve and mouthpiece sold as one unit. It seals itself when you pull it off the chamber and opens only when you press your lips to the mouthpiece. You never wash it; you replace it. Every new Volcano ships with Easy Valve, and it is the only system the Hybrid takes. The Solid Valve is the older, Classic-only alternative: a reusable steel valve fitted with balloon film cut from a roll, cheaper per bag and more work to clean.

Loading the Volcano Filling Chamber

Grind medium-fine. S&B's manual says a finer grind gives the hot air more surface, but powder slips through the screens; our guide to choosing the right grind explains the balance.

On the Hybrid, unscrew the cap, fill no higher than the lower edge of the funnel-shaped hopper, and screw the cap back on. On the Classic's Easy Valve chamber, S&B gives a fill depth of 1 mm to 10 mm. Leave it loose, because the pump has to push air through the load, and make sure the upper screen clicks into its notch.

How to Fill a Volcano Bag, Step by Step

These steps follow S&B's Hybrid manual and operation guide. Classic differences are in brackets.

  1. Heat the base. Press HEAT and set the temperature with plus and minus (Classic: flip the HEAT rocker and turn the dial). Wait for the ready signal.
  2. Fit the chamber. Screw it clockwise onto the hot air outlet until it stops, without forcing it (Classic: seat it on the outlet).
  3. Prepare a balloon. Take the mouthpiece off and stretch the bag straight so it stands upright while it fills.
  4. Preheat the herb. Press AIR and let the pump run for about five seconds.
  5. Attach the balloon. Push it onto the chamber until it locks. That opens the valve and the bag starts filling.
  6. Watch the vapor. S&B says half a balloon or less is often enough. Never fill it tight.
  7. Stop and lift. Switch the pump off and remove the chamber with the balloon still attached, holding only the knobs or textured grip.
  8. Separate. Pull the balloon off the chamber and its valve closes. Set the hot chamber on a heat-resistant surface and click the mouthpiece onto the valve.
  9. Inhale. Press your lips gently against the mouthpiece to open the valve and draw slowly for a few seconds. Our inhaling guide covers pace.

For the next bag, put the chamber back on the outlet and repeat from step 3.

Warning: Do not leave the filling chamber on the outlet between bags while the heater is on. S&B warns it overheats and can burn your fingers, and it keeps toasting herb you are not using.

Tip: To finish a deflating bag, stretch the balloon taut and inhale the rest. Never blow into it; S&B says that leaves moisture inside and risks contamination.

How Long Does Vapor Last in a Volcano Bag?

About ten minutes. Storz & Bickel's manual says vapor condenses on the inside of the bag over a few hours, so a balloon is not for storage, and asks you to fill only what you will inhale within ten minutes. A full bag that sits loses density and tastes stale.

How Many Bags From One Chamber?

S&B does not put a number on it. The manual says a load can be refilled until no more vapor forms at the top temperature, that regrinding between bags exposes more surface, and that heat should be the last resort because the taste turns roasted. So start low and step up as bags fill thinner. These are our starting points, in line with our temperature guide, not S&B settings.

Second190°C to 195°C6 (190°C)Denser, still flavorful
Third200°C to 210°C7 (202°C)Heavier, more toasted

When the herb comes out an even brown it is done, and our guide to already vaped bud covers what to do with it. The manuals also list other plants for the Volcano, such as chamomile at level 6, which our guide to herbs you can vape picks up.

How Many Times Can You Use a Volcano Bag?

Many times, on a schedule: Storz & Bickel's cleaning instructions say to replace the Easy Valve balloon and its mouthpiece every two weeks for hygiene, to keep each balloon to one person, and to clean the filling chamber before fitting a fresh one. Retailers often quote a working life of around 100 fills, but that is a durability figure, not a hygiene one.

A six-pack of standard 60 cm balloons was $49 at Smoke Cartel, Headshop.com and Daily High Club when we checked in October 2026, about $8.17 a bag.

The cheaper route is already in your box. Both machines ship with an Easy Valve Balloon with Adapter, which takes bags you cut yourself: S&B says to cut 50 cm to 60 cm of balloon tube, tie one end, and lock the open end onto the valve with the fixation ring. A 3 m roll makes about five bags.

Using the Whip on the Volcano Hybrid

The Hybrid's Tube Kit is a 1 m tube with a swivel connector (the Tube Flexer) and a mouthpiece.

  1. Heat the Hybrid as usual with the pump off; S&B is explicit that the tube is used without it.
  2. Seat the Tube Flexer in the loaded chamber where a balloon would go, then screw the chamber clockwise onto the outlet until it stops.
  3. Inhale slowly through the mouthpiece for a few seconds at a time.

Warning: Never use a tube shorter than 1 m. Storz & Bickel says a shorter tube does not cool the vapor enough and warns of burns.

S&B treats the tube like a balloon: replace it every two weeks, keep it to one person, never blow into it, and clean the Flexer and mouthpiece with the chamber. A spare whip and connector was $24.99 at To The Cloud.

Small Loads: The Reducer and Dosing Capsules

The reducer (S&B calls it the Dosing Capsule Adapter) replaces the cylinder inside the filling chamber with a 15 mm cup. It takes a pinch of loose herb or one Storz & Bickel dosing capsule, roughly a tenth of a gram, so a solo session still fills a dense bag. The Hybrid and Classic versions are different parts; the Classic one was $12.99 at To The Cloud.

Capsules are shared with the Mighty+ and Venty; a 40-pack was $11.99 at Headshop.com, and S&B labels them single use. Our guide to dosing capsules covers the pros and cons.

For concentrates, the Volcano is the wrong tool. S&B's Hybrid manual describes a Drip Pad for plant oils but says that vapor must not be inhaled directly, and its US store no longer listed a liquid pad when we checked in September. Our guide to vaping concentrates in a dry herb vaporizer covers better options.

The S&B Web App (Hybrid Only)

The Hybrid connects over Bluetooth to Storz & Bickel's web app at app.storz-bickel.com. Open it in Chrome on Android, Chrome or Edge on Windows, or the Bluefy browser on an iPhone or Mac. It sets the temperature, changes the auto shut-off, installs firmware updates, and builds workflows that step the heater and pump through timed stages. None of it is needed to fill a bag.

Cleaning a Volcano and Replacing Wear Parts

Chamber parts can go in a dishwasher, though S&B warns the screens and rings get lost there. The base only gets a barely damp cloth. Our guide to cleaning a dry herb vaporizer covers the general routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is in a Volcano bag?

Vapor from the herb in the filling chamber, carried in warm air from the pump, with no smoke because nothing burns. The bag itself is a food-safe, heat-resistant film; Storz & Bickel does not publish the exact polymer.

How many times can you use a Volcano bag?

As many fills as you like within Storz & Bickel's schedule: a new Easy Valve balloon and mouthpiece every two weeks, kept to one person. Retailers quote around 100 fills as a balloon's working life.

What are some alternatives to Volcano bags?

The Balloon with Adapter in the box takes bags you cut from a roll of balloon tube. S&B's manual also allows an odor-free, heat-resistant, food-safe oven bag or tube, and rules out other plastic bags and cling wrap. Hybrid owners can use the tube instead.

Can you use a whip on the Volcano Classic?

Not properly. Storz & Bickel sells tube parts for the Hybrid only, and To The Cloud notes that a whip on a Classic chamber tips it over unless you hold it.

Is the Volcano good for sharing?

Yes. One machine can serve a whole room, which is why it is on our list of the best vaporizers for groups. S&B's hygiene advice is one balloon and mouthpiece per person, so give each guest their own bag rather than passing one around. If you are new to vaping altogether, our guide to using a dry herb vaporizer starts from zero.
