What to do with kief from your grinder: vape it without clogging the screen, press it into hash, decarb it for edibles, and store it so it keeps its strength.

Kief is the golden dust of trichome heads that collects under the screen of a four-piece grinder, and by weight it is roughly two to three times stronger than the flower it fell off. If you own a dry herb vaporizer, the easiest use is a pinch sprinkled over a packed bowl or mixed through the grind, at your usual temperature. You can also press it into hash, or decarboxylate it and cook it into butter for edibles. The one thing not to do is fill a chamber with pure kief.

What Is Kief?

Cannabis flowers are covered in trichomes, tiny resin glands that look like mushrooms under a loupe. The big capitate ones on the flower are where the plant makes and stores most of its cannabinoids and terpenes, as a 2021 study in Molecules puts it. When dry flower is handled or ground, the heads snap off. Sieve them out and you have kief, also spelled kif or keef, the same word behind Morocco's traditional sieved hash. Press kief and it becomes hash.

Color tells you roughly how clean it is. Pale gold to blond kief is mostly trichome heads. Green kief carries more ground leaf and flower dust, which is normal from a grinder with a coarse screen.

Is kief stronger than flower?

Yes, by a wide margin. We cannot measure potency ourselves, so these numbers come from published lab work. The same study sifted dried flower from four strains through a 150-micron screen and measured both. These are total cannabinoids, nearly all still in acid form (THCA, plus CBDA in the mixed strain):

Strain (type)Dried flowerDried kiefKief vs flower
Doug Fir (high THC)22.1%58.8%2.7 times
Ursa Major (high THC)24.1%48.5%2.0 times
Tangie Biscotti (high THC)15.2%51.0%3.4 times
Astral Works (THC and CBD)11.5%25.3%2.2 times

That kief came off a machine with a 150-micron drum. Grinder kief, with its plant dust, is probably at the lower end, and nobody can tell you the number for your jar. Treat it as two to three times your flower and dose accordingly.

How to Collect Kief and Get It Out of Your Grinder

A four-piece grinder does the collecting for you. Ground herb sits on a mesh screen, and trichomes that shake loose fall through into the bottom chamber, the kief catcher. Our sibling guide to using a weed grinder explains the anatomy.

  1. Unscrew the bottom chamber over a sheet of paper, so stray dust has somewhere to land.
  2. Scrape it out with the small scraper most grinders ship with, or the edge of a card. Push the pile to one side and lift it, rather than grinding it into the threads.
  3. Brush the underside of the screen gently. A dry, soft brush moves more than scraping, and pressing hard on the mesh tears it.
  4. Try the coin trick for more. Drop a clean coin into the screen chamber, close the grinder and shake it for a minute. The coin knocks resin off the mesh and the walls.

Once the walls and teeth are coated, a short spell in the freezer makes the resin brittle enough to tap loose; our guide to cleaning a weed grinder covers that harvest step by step, along with cleaning the grinder afterward.

Tip: Empty the catcher whenever a real layer has built up, rather than leaving it for months. Small, fresh batches are easier to dose and get used before they go stale.

Can You Vape Kief? Yes, With Flower

Kief vaporizes like the flower it came from. Our guide to vaping concentrates in a dry herb vaporizer has a short kief section, and the rules are simple: it does not melt into a puddle, so it needs no pad, but it falls through coarse screens and chokes airflow when packed alone. Always use it with flower.

Sprinkle or mix

Grind and pack your bowl as normal, then either dust a thin layer of kief on top or stir a pinch through the grind before you load it. Mixing spreads it evenly, which makes the dose more predictable. Either way, keep the pack loose.

In a dosing capsule

If your vaporizer takes dosing capsules, load the flower and kief mix into a capsule. Its screen holds fine powder better than an open oven, and the oven stays cleaner, which matters because kief is mostly resin.

On a DynaVap

The tip holds about a tenth of a gram over a fine screen, the CCD. Put a little flower on the screen first so the kief cannot sift through it, add a small pinch of kief mixed into the next layer, and top up with flower. Then heat to the click as usual; our DynaVap guide covers the technique. A tip that small leaves little room for error, so start with a smaller pinch than you would in a bigger oven.

What temperature to vape kief at

Kief carries the same cannabinoids and terpenes as flower, just more of them, so use your normal settings. Our flower temperature guide explains the trade-offs, and the terpene boiling points chart puts THC's useful vaporizer window at 180 to 210°C (356 to 410°F). Starting near the bottom of that range and stepping up gets the flavor first.

How much kief to add

This is where a scale and some arithmetic help. Take kief at around 50% and 0.05 grams of it: that is about 25 mg of cannabinoids in the bowl. A 0.1 g bowl of 20% flower holds 20 mg. So a modest pinch can more than double a session. Our dosing calculator does the sum for you: switch it to "How much THC is in my flower," enter 50 as the percentage and your kief weight, and it shows roughly what reaches you. Start small, especially if you mostly microdose.

How to Press Kief Into Hash

Pressing kief changes how it handles, not how strong it is. The same weight goes in and comes out. What you gain is a solid piece that does not drift through screens, spill in the jar or cling to everything.

  • Pollen press. A small metal cylinder with a screw plunger. Fill it, crank it down hard, wait a few minutes and push out a coin of hash. Warming the press in your hands first helps the resin bind.
  • Parchment and pressure. Fold the kief inside parchment paper and press it firmly between your palms, or with a heavy, warm object. It gives a softer, looser slab.

Crumble pressed hash over a bowl exactly as you would kief.

Rosin is different. Heat and pressure squeeze the resin out of the kief through a fine filter bag, and what comes out is a sticky concentrate that needs a pad or a dab device. Rosin presses do this with controlled plate temperatures. The hair straightener method works on the same principle with much less control and real burn risk, so if you try it, use heat-resistant gloves and small amounts. Rosin belongs on a pad or in one of the concentrate vaporizers, not loose in a flower oven.

How to Smoke Kief

For people who still smoke, kief goes on top of a packed pipe bowl, a habit called crowning, or gets sprinkled along the inside of a joint before it is rolled. Either way it adds strength fast, and the same start-small rule applies. If you are trying to move from smoke to vapor, kief is one of the easiest things to bring with you, and our guide to switching from smoking covers the rest.

Making Edibles With Kief: Decarb It First

This is the big difference between kief and already vaped bud. AVB has been through your vaporizer, so its THCA has already turned into THC. Kief has not. In the study above, dried kief from the three high-THC strains held 45.6 to 56.3% THCA and 1.1% THC or less. THCA is not what gets you high, so kief has to be decarboxylated before it goes into butter or oil.

How to decarb kief

A 2016 decarboxylation study heated thin films of cannabis extract and found THCA approached zero after 30 minutes at 110°C, 9 minutes at 130°C and 6 minutes at 145°C. Below 100°C, the conversion did not finish within an hour, which is why a low infusion alone will not do it. A paper the authors cite saw THC peak within 5 to 10 minutes at 145°C and then fall with longer heating, so hotter and longer is not better.

Those were lab conditions: a thin film in a vacuum oven. At home:

  1. Spread the kief thinly on parchment in a small oven-safe dish.
  2. Bake at 110 to 115°C (230 to 240°F) for about 40 minutes. The extra time covers the dish warming up and a home oven cycling around its setting; an oven thermometer tells you what yours actually does.
  3. Let it cool. It will look darker and may clump.

Infusing and dosing

From there it is the same job as AVB. Stir the decarbed kief into butter or coconut oil and hold it warm, never boiling, using any method in our AVB butter guide. Kief is mostly resin, so a fine strain at the end is enough.

Do the dose math before you bake. THCA loses about 12% of its weight when it becomes THC, which is why the USDA's hemp rules count 87.7% of THCA toward total THC. One gram of kief at 50% THCA is roughly 440 mg of THC on paper. In a stick of butter shared across 24 cookies, that is about 18 mg each, before any losses. Half a gram makes a gentler batch.

Warning: Edibles take far longer to land than vapor. Colorado's guidance is to take less than one 10 mg serving and wait at least 90 minutes, and up to four hours, before taking more. With homemade kief butter, whose strength is an estimate, start with a fraction of a serving.

None of this is medical advice; it is harm reduction for a batch whose strength is a guess.

How Long Does Kief Last?

Kief does not expire on a date, but it fades. A four-year forensic study stored hashish and herbal cannabis under different conditions: at room temperature, light or dark, THC steadily broke down into CBN until almost none was left after four years. Significant changes showed up only in the room-temperature samples, not the refrigerated or frozen ones. The smell goes first, as the terpenes evaporate.

To keep kief at its best:

  • Small glass jar, little air. Kief has a lot of surface for its weight, so headspace matters more than with buds.
  • Cool and dark. A cupboard away from the stove beats a sunny shelf.
  • Freezer for long-term only. Seal it well and let the jar reach room temperature before opening, so condensation does not form on the powder.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to use kief?

For a vaporizer owner, mixed through or sprinkled over a normal flower bowl, at your usual temperature. It costs nothing extra, needs no equipment and you can dose it by weight. If a large stash builds up, decarbing it for edibles uses a lot of it at once.

Can you make edibles with just kief?

Yes, but decarboxylate it first. Kief is almost all THCA, which needs about 30 to 40 minutes at around 110°C to convert. Then infuse it into butter or oil at low heat and dose cautiously, because kief butter is strong.

Can you vape pure kief?

Not in a flower oven. A chamber of pure kief falls through the screen and blocks airflow. Mix it with flower, or press it into rosin for a concentrate device.

What do you do with kief from a grinder?

Scrape it out of the bottom chamber whenever a layer builds up, store it in a small glass jar, and add a pinch to your vape bowls. When the jar fills up, press it into hash or decarb it for edibles.

What can I do with old kief?

Darker, faded kief has lost terpenes and some THC to CBN, so it tastes flat and hits softer, but it still works in a bowl or in edibles. If it smells musty or shows any fuzz, throw it out; moldy material should never be vaped or eaten.
