How does the Hot Rod's heat injector work?
A ceramic heating rod sheathed in a matrix of rubies sits inside the titanium injector, so the air you draw is heated on the way to your material, the same principle as a ball vape. The shower head tip sends heat down the centre of the chamber while focusing most of it around the perimeter, which keeps extraction even.
How do you find your setting on the Hot Rod's analog controller?
The controller is a single analog dial with no numbers or temperature readout, so you work up from a low setting and remember where you left it. The dial holds its position when power is cut, which is why Old Head suggested pairing the Hot Rod with a smart switch.
What glass and screens does the Hot Rod chamber take?
The included walnut chamber ships with a 14mm male glass connector, and Old Head sold an 18mm connector separately for other labware. Material rests on a 5/8 inch stainless screen that seats on top of that connector. The screens Old Head sells now are 3/4 inch and 21mm, so neither fits.
How much material does the Hot Rod hold?
Old Head built its Measuring Spoon around this chamber. The scoop side holds roughly 0.1g to 0.2g depending on how you fill it, and the tamping end is heavy enough to tamp the bowl under its own weight.
Why is the Hot Rod's handle made of wood?
Wood insulates well, so the walnut and cherry handle from Sticky Brick Labs stays cool while the titanium tip in front of it is hot. Magnets in the handle and the base give it a positive click when you park it between draws.
Does Old Head still make the Hot Rod?
No. The oldhead.co page for it is archive only now, the domain redirects to the Old Head store, and the current range is the Freight Train, Dab-Ready and Terp-Ready. VapeFiend, who stocked the 220V model, lists it as discontinued but still carries the optional Heat Guard, an aluminium shield that screws to the base.
Hot Rod Cleaning & Maintenance
The Hot Rod's shower head tip sits down inside the bowl, so the ring of small holes around the titanium injector is the first thing to load up with resin and fine particulate. Below it, the walnut extraction chamber and its 5/8 inch stainless screen catch what the tip does not, and the male glass connector under that screen collects condensate on the way into your labware.
-
Cut the power and wait. Turn the dial off, unplug the controller and leave the injector alone until the titanium is cool to the touch. Old Head's warnings across its heater range are blunt about the metal getting extremely hot and never being handled while powered.
-
Never soak the injector. The ceramic heating rod and the ruby matrix around it live inside the titanium tip, which is wired through the wooden handle to the silicone jacketed cable. It does not come apart and it cannot go in a jar of solvent. Wipe the outside with a cotton bud dampened in isopropyl, then clear the shower head holes with a dry pick or a stiff brush so heat keeps reaching the perimeter of the bowl the way the tip was designed to.
-
Lift the glass to strip the chamber. Sticky Brick Labs built the walnut chamber so the stainless screen seats directly on top of the glass connector. Pulling the connector out of the wood brings the screen with it, and that is the whole disassembly.
-
Isopropyl for glass and steel only. Soak the connector and the screen, rinse both in warm water and dry them fully before they go back. Screens are consumables, so fit a fresh one once it stops rinsing clean. The 14mm male connector can be swapped for an 18mm version for different labware, and any o-ring goes into the wood before the glass.
-
Warm water for the walnut. Sticky Brick, who make the wooden parts, rule out alcohol on wood completely. A cotton swab, warm water and thorough drying is the limit for the chamber, the walnut and cherry handle and the base, with Sticky Brick Butter as the only conditioner they approve.
-
Keep the electronics dry. Wipe the controller housing and the dial with a dry cloth. Check the high temp silicone cable where it enters the handle and the box, since flexing shows there first.
The handle parks on magnets, so brush dust off the mating faces on the handle and base to keep it seating flush, and remove the two screws holding the optional aluminium heat guard when you need clear access. Wipe the tip after each session and strip the chamber weekly.
