Kandypens Oculus

The Oculus is a nectar collector, so the heated quartz tip goes straight into the concentrate instead of a bowl being loaded. Residue collects on the outside of that tip where it touches the material and inside it where vapour is pulled through, and anything the water in the bubbler does not catch settles on the glass above. Kandypens gives a specific routine for this device, and its firmest rule is that water and the atomizer never mix.

1. Take the cap off before the glass moves: The manual asks for the plastic coil cover to come off the quartz tip before the glass is fitted onto the base or taken back off. To free the bubbler, pull and gently turn it away from the battery rather than levering it to one side.

2. Soak the quartz tip in isopropyl: Kandypens says to remove the Crystal Quartz atomizer completely from the Oculus battery and submerge it in 90 percent isopropyl for one to two hours, which lifts out material that has worked into places it should not reach. They recommend doing this fairly regularly to extend the atomizer's life. Never put water inside the atomizer.

3. Air dry the coil before refitting it: Kandypens asks for the atomizer to be air dried after the soak, so leave it until no alcohol remains before it goes back on the battery and gets power. Let the tip cool after a session as well, since the manual warns against touching the heating chamber until it has cooled down.

4. Empty and refill the bubbler off the base: Take the glass off the battery to fill it, bring the water to just above the two intake holes and no further, and keep the device upright in use. The manual warns against overfilling the cups. Change the water often, because a chamber this small turns the flavour stale quickly.

5. Wipe the base and leave it sealed: The battery section carries the 500mAh cell and the USB-C port, and Kandypens voids the warranty if the Oculus base is taken apart. Keep it clear of moisture and humidity, clean the outside and the atomizer connection with a barely damp swab, and store the device in a cool dark place on its holder.

6. Treat the tip as a consumable: The lifetime warranty covers the battery only and excludes glass and atomizers, and Kandypens expects quartz tips to need replacing over time. Replacement Oculus coils are sold separately.

Sesh mode is not a burn off. Two presses of the button run the coil at 1.8V for thirty seconds as a preheat, so residue comes off with isopropyl rather than with heat.
