How to use a weed grinder: what each chamber of a 2, 3 or 4 piece grinder does, how to load and twist it, the grind your vape wants, and what to do without one.

To use a weed grinder, break your buds into pea-sized pieces, drop them around the teeth rather than on the center post, put the lid on and twist five or six times, then check, tap the grinder and open the lower chamber to collect the ground flower. In a three or four piece grinder the herb falls through holes into a collection chamber, and in a four piece a screen under that chamber sifts loose trichomes (kief) into a catcher at the bottom. More turns give a finer grind, fewer turns a coarser one.
That is enough for a joint. A vaporizer is fussier, because the grind decides how heat and air move through the oven, so most of this guide is about getting the grind your device wants. Our guide to choosing the right grind covers why consistency matters; this one is about the grinder. Our reviews note the grind that suited each device, and we have used the Chewy G3 and DaVinci's dosage grinder ourselves. For other grinders we work from the makers' own specs.

Weed Grinder Anatomy: What Each Piece Does
The piece count is how many sections come apart, and each extra piece adds a chamber below the teeth.
- Lid: Teeth on its underside, and usually a magnet in the middle that holds it on.
- Teeth chamber: Its teeth mesh with the lid's. On three and four piece grinders its floor is drilled with holes.
- Collection chamber: Catches the ground herb that falls through. This is the part you pour from.
- Screen: A fine mesh floor under the collection chamber on a four piece. Herb stays on top and loose trichomes shake through.
- Kief catcher: The bottom dish that collects whatever passes the screen, usually with a small scraper included. Our guide on what to do with kief covers using it.
| Grinder | What you get | Where ground herb ends up | Kief | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 piece | Lid and teeth chamber | Stays in the teeth; you pick it out | Mixed in with the herb | Small loads, DynaVap tips, travel |
| 3 piece | Adds a collection chamber | Falls through into the chamber | Mixed in with the herb | Most daily vaping |
| 4 piece | Adds a screen and kief catcher | Collection chamber | Sifted into the bottom catcher | Daily use, if you want to save kief |
How to Use a 4 Piece Grinder, Step by Step
A three piece works the same way minus the kief, and a two piece stops at step 5.
- Start clean and dry. Wash a new grinder in warm soapy water and dry it fully; it came from a machine shop, not a kitchen. Gummed-up teeth tear instead of cutting, which our guide to cleaning a weed grinder fixes.
- Break the buds up by hand. Pull the flower into pieces about the size of a pea and pick out the stems, which vaporize into nothing useful and wedge between the teeth.
- Load around the teeth, not the center. The center is where the lid pivots and the magnet sits, so herb there gets squashed rather than cut. Keep the pile below the tips of the teeth.
- Put the lid on and twist. Hold the body in one hand and turn the lid with the other. Five or six full turns is a good first stop, and back and forth works as well as one direction on most grinders.
- Check it. Pieces still sitting in the teeth need more turns or are too sticky to drop. Every extra turn takes the grind finer, so stop when it looks right.
- Tap and empty. Tap the grinder on a table to knock the last bits through, then unscrew the collection chamber and pour onto a tray, into a dosing capsule, or straight into the oven.
- Leave the kief to build. The catcher fills slowly, and a thin dusting is not worth scraping.
The Upside-Down Trick for a Finer or Coarser Grind
Hold the grinder lid-down while you twist and the herb sits on the lid's teeth instead of falling through, so every turn keeps cutting and the grind comes out finer. Flip it and tap to drop it through. Grinding the right way up lets pieces fall as soon as they fit the holes, for a coarser, fluffier grind. Upside down suits a Volcano or a PAX; right way up suits an Arizer.
Tip: A grinder that keeps jamming is overloaded or the flower is too moist. Tip half out and reverse a quarter turn; forcing a jam is how cheap teeth bend.
Matching the Grind to Your Vaporizer
Chunks heat unevenly, and dust clogs screens and gets pulled into the vapor path. Between those extremes, the right grind depends on how the device heats (see convection vs conduction) and on its oven and screens. Here is what the makers recommend and what our reviews found.
| Device | Grind that works | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Arizer Solo 2, Air Max and ArGo | Coarse to medium-coarse | Fines fall through the glass screen; Arizer recommends whole or coarsely ground herb, and our ArGo review liked a slightly coarse, soft pack |
| DaVinci IQC, IQ2 and MIQRO-C | Medium | Fine material passes the oven holes into the mouthpiece, as we found in our IQC review |
| PAX Plus, Mini and PAX 3 | Medium to fine, packed firm | The oven heats by contact; the hybrid Flow and Four want a lighter pack (PAX accessories guide) |
| DynaVap | Medium and fluffy | A tiny tip filled loosely to three quarters (how to use a DynaVap) |
| Volcano Hybrid and Classic | Fine, but not dust | Air passes through the herb in a wide, shallow chamber (Volcano accessories guide) |
Where a maker disagrees with a general rule, follow the maker. Our guides to packing a dry herb vaporizer and using one pick up from the grinder.
Arizer owners whose grinder makes dust can buy the fix from Arizer: a magnetic three piece Herb Mill in 6063 aluminum, with teeth and holes set up for a coarse grind. It was $55.24 in October 2026, down from $64.99.

| Type | Best for | Grind result | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toothed 2 piece | Small loads, DynaVap, travel | Coarse to medium, a little uneven | Herb stays in the teeth; no kief |
| Toothed 3 or 4 piece | Most portable and desktop vaporizers | Consistent, coarse to fine depending on turns | Bulkier, and the screen needs care |
| Mill-style (rounded teeth) | DynaVap and small conduction ovens | Light and fluffy, little dust | Built around one kind of grind |
| Dosing grinder | Filling dosing capsules | Medium, straight into the pods | Only fits one brand's pods |
| Electric (Chewy G3) | Weak grip, grinding straight into an oven | Consistent medium | Battery, noise, more parts to clean |
| Grinder card | A backup in your wallet | Coarse shreds | Slow, sharp, and resin clogs the holes |
| Blade coffee or spice grinder | Big batches at home | Fine to powder in seconds | Overshoots easily |
Electric Grinders
The Chewy G3 is the electric grinder we tested, and it changed our minds about battery grinders. Load up to 5 grams, press one button, and five food-grade stainless steel blades do the work, per Chewy's FAQ. A trigger dispenses straight into a tube or an oven. It is louder than a lid and not airtight, so it is a grinder, not a stash jar. The best case for it is hands: if arthritis or a weak grip makes twisting a chore, a button helps. Our Chewy G3 guide has the rest.
Chewy G3 Portable Electronic Grinder
The Standard edition: rechargeable, one-button grinding into a cup, a tube or an oven.

A mill-style grinder swaps sharp teeth for rounded ones. DynaVap's DynaGrynd, built with Stache, uses what DynaVap calls patented micro-rounded teeth that separate flower along its natural seams instead of slicing it, giving the fluffy texture a DynaVap tip extracts best. It is a 42 mm, four piece anodized aluminum grinder with a collection chamber and a separate storage compartment, and it stacks onto the DynaBank from our DynaVap accessories guide.

It came with our IQ2 Carbon review sample and is the best-thought-out capsule setup we have used. It was out of stock at $59.96 when we checked; our DaVinci accessories guide tracks it.
How to Choose a Weed Grinder
- Material: Anodized aluminum is the default. It is light and hard, and it takes an isopropyl soak. Cheap zinc alloy grinders are heavy and usually painted, and paint flakes. Acrylic is fine as a spare. Wood looks good and cleans badly.
- Teeth: Sharp, faceted teeth cut cleanly. The round pegs on cheap acrylic grinders tear and compress, which makes clumps.
- Size: For one person, 2 to 2.5 inches across is right; Santa Cruz Shredder's medium is 2 1/8 inches and Space Case's is 2.5. Go bigger only to fill a desktop or a batch of capsules at once, which is what Storz & Bickel's 90 mm Herb Mill XL is for.
- Screen: Mesh numbers count openings per inch, so higher means finer. Kannastör sells its replaceable Easy Change Screen in 60 and 100 mesh; 60 passes kief faster with more plant dust, 100 is slower and cleaner. Screens wear out first, so replaceable is worth having.
- Closure and warranty: Magnets hold the lid and threads hold the rest, and cheap threads cross easily. Santa Cruz Shredder, Space Case and Kannastör all offer limited lifetime warranties, with fine print our cleaning guide spells out.
Note: "Medical grade" on a grinder listing is decoration. Space Case, which has made aluminum grinders for 25 years, says on its own technical page that there is no such thing as medical grade aluminum.
In October 2026, $19.95 bought a Santa Cruz Shredder hemp four piece, $46 a Kannastör 2.2 inch four piece with a glass jar body at DankStop, $79.95 Santa Cruz Shredder's aluminum medium four piece, and $114.99 Space Case's medium polished four piece. The cheap one grinds. The expensive ones grind evenly for longer.
Common Grinder Mistakes
- Overfilling: A packed chamber barely turns, and crushes instead of cutting.
- Grinding to dust: Powder slips through screens, chokes airflow and turns harsh fast.
- Grinding days ahead: Ground flower has far more surface exposed than a whole bud, so it dries out and loses aroma faster. Grind on the day, or fill sealed dosing capsules. Our guide to the best way to store weed covers keeping the rest fresh.
- Grinding damp flower: Moist flower gums up the teeth. SLX, which makes non-stick coated grinders, says buildup shows up mainly above about 12 percent moisture.
How to Grind Weed Without a Grinder
Scissors in a shot glass is the best no-grinder method for a vaporizer: a reasonably even medium grind from a kitchen drawer.
- Scissors and a shot glass: Drop a session's worth into a shot glass, point clean scissors straight down, and snip with short strokes, turning the glass as you go. A minute or two does a bowl.
- Kitchen knife: Chop on a cutting board and rock the blade through it. Sticky flower climbs the blade; scrape it back with a card.
- Coffee or spice grinder: A blade grinder gets there in seconds, which is the problem. Use one-second pulses and check after two or three. It suits a Volcano's fine grind and overshoots for a DaVinci or an Arizer. Keep a dedicated one unless you want your coffee to taste of it.
- Fingers: A coarse, uneven grind and sticky fingers. It suits an Arizer, and will do in a conduction oven if you stir halfway through.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you properly use a weed grinder?
Break the buds into pea-sized pieces, remove the stems, and load them around the teeth, not the center. Twist five or six times, check, and add turns until the grind looks right, then tap and pour from the collection chamber.
How do you use a grinder for the first time?
Wash it in warm soapy water and let it dry completely. Then grind a small amount and check after a few turns, since every grinder cuts differently.
What is the bottom compartment of a weed grinder for?
On a four piece grinder it is the kief catcher. A mesh screen above it lets loose trichomes, the resin glands that carry much of the flower's cannabinoids and aroma, fall through as you grind. It fills slowly, and you scrape it out with the included tool.
How many times should you twist a grinder?
Start with five or six full turns and check. A Volcano wants more turns than a DaVinci or a DynaVap, and an Arizer fewest of all.
Should you grind weed right before you vape it?
Ideally, yes. Ground flower dries out and loses aroma faster than whole buds. To prep ahead, fill dosing capsules and keep them sealed.
