The best way to store weed is as whole buds in an airtight glass or stainless steel container that the flower nearly fills, with a 58% or 62% humidity pack inside, kept somewhere dark and a little below normal room temperature. That handles the four things that degrade flower: light, heat, air and the wrong humidity. Stored like that, flower stays good to vape for months. No jar stops the clock, but a good one slows it a lot.

Why Storage Shows Up Faster in a Vaporizer

Smoke covers up stale flower. A vaporizer doesn't. At typical settings, roughly 160 to 210°C (320 to 410°F), the first thing you taste is terpenes, aroma compounds that also evaporate slowly from a jar at room temperature (our terpene boiling points chart explains why they don't need to boil to escape). Once they're gone, low-temperature sessions taste of hay and toast.

Moisture shows up just as quickly. Over-dry flower grinds to dust and gives thin, harsh draws that end early. Damp flower has to give up its water before it vaporizes properly, so the first draws are weak, and flower kept damp for long can mold. Badly stored herb made our list of common vaporizer mistakes for that reason.

The Four Things That Ruin Weed: Light, Heat, Air and Humidity

EnemyWhat it doesWhat to aim for
LightThe biggest single cause of cannabinoid loss in storageAn opaque container, or glass kept in a closed cupboard
HeatSpeeds up every breakdown reactionCool and stable, ideally under 20°C (68°F)
AirOxygen turns THC into CBN; open air carries terpenes awayAn airtight seal and very little empty space
HumidityToo low makes flower brittle and harsh; too high invites mold55 to 65% relative humidity

Light

Fairbairn, Liebmann and Rowan (1976) stored herbal and resin cannabis for up to two years and found that light, not even direct sunlight, was the greatest single factor in cannabinoid loss. A four-year study by Zamengo and colleagues (2019) kept samples under constant light at 22°C, in the dark at room temperature, in a fridge and in a freezer. The room-temperature samples lost THC steadily as it turned into CBN, and in the worst conditions almost none was left by year four.

A clear jar is fine in a cupboard and bad on a sunny shelf. Dark violet or UV-blocking glass buys some margin if the jar sits out.

Heat

Milay and colleagues (2020) stored flower in the dark at 25, 4, -30 and -80°C for a year. The 25°C (77°F) samples changed the most, and THCA in their THC-dominant flower dropped by about a third. Fairbairn's group found temperatures up to 20°C made little difference over two years. Aim for a stable spot under about 20°C, away from radiators, sunny windowsills, the top of the fridge and the car.

Air

Fairbairn's team found air oxidation caused significant losses and, in the dark, pushed CBN up. They also described the resin glands as "well filled, well closed containers", so losses rise when trichomes get crushed or knocked off. That's the case for whole buds, gentle handling and a jar the stash nearly fills without being jammed tight.

If you buy in bulk, split it into a small jar for the week and a larger one that stays shut.

Humidity

The ASTM D8197 standard for storing dry cannabis flower sets a water activity range of 0.55 to 0.65, with the upper limit guarding against mold and the lower one against breakage in handling. Translated, flower sealed in a jar should sit at 55 to 65% relative humidity. A two-way humidity pack holds it there and a cheap hygrometer confirms it; our humidity management guide covers checking and correcting it.

Glass wins because it is inert, cheap and easy to clean; a canning jar with a fresh seal, kept in the dark, is as good as anything in a head shop. Stainless steel solves the light problem outright: Vivi, which now sells the CVault, says it is 304 stainless with a food-grade silicone gasket and calls it smell-resistant, and Headshop.com lists the CVault from $29.

Vacuum-sealed bags are airtight but squash buds flat and break trichomes, so keep them for bulk storage. Zip bags let smell through, block no light and turn buds into a pancake in a pocket. Our stash jar guide goes deeper on products; these two are where we would start.

Should You Store Weed in the Fridge or Freezer?

In the lab, cold wins. Milay's group found 4°C was the best condition overall for keeping both cannabinoids and terpenes, and Zamengo's refrigerated and frozen samples, kept in the dark, didn't show the losses seen at room temperature.

A lab fridge is not a kitchen fridge, though. Yours is opened dozens of times a day and smells of food, and when a cold jar meets warm room air, water condenses on whatever is cold. Open the jar chilled and that water lands on your buds. If you refrigerate, use an airtight jar, let it reach room temperature before opening, and don't shuttle it in and out daily. For the everyday jar, a cool cupboard is the better compromise.

The freezer is a long-term tool only. In Milay's study, the -30 and -80°C samples lost more of some terpenes, alpha-pinene especially, than the 4°C ones, so freezing protects potency over a long hold more than flavor. Frozen trichomes also turn brittle, the same reason the freezer trick knocks kief loose in a grinder. Freeze only sealed jars you won't touch for months, and never shake or handle frozen buds.

Warning: Never open a chilled or frozen jar straight away. Leave it sealed until it reaches room temperature, or warm air will condense water onto cold buds, which is how a careful long-term stash ends up moldy.

Whole Buds vs Pre-Ground Weed

Milay's team also compared whole and ground flower. The ground samples had lower terpene levels across the board, and at room temperature they built up more breakdown products, which the authors put down to far more surface area meeting the air. Grinding a week's worth on Sunday costs you flavor by Thursday.

Grind just before you pack. Our guide to using a weed grinder covers technique and our guide to choosing the right grind covers how fine to go. The sensible exception is pre-filled dosing capsules for a day out, filled the morning you leave.

Do You Need a Humidity Pack?

If you live somewhere dry, open your jar daily, or buy flower that arrives crispy, yes. A two-way pack adds or absorbs water vapor to hold the jar at one humidity, and a small one costs about $1 to $2. Boveda's cannabis packs, now sold under the Vivi Fresh name, come in 58% and 62%; Integra Boost makes 55% and 62%. Use one pack type per jar, size it to the flower, and replace it on schedule (Vivi says every three months).

Which humidity suits which vaporizer, how long packs last and what they cost are in our Boveda vs Integra Boost comparison, along with how to rehydrate flower that has already dried out.

How Long Does Weed Last?

For potency, a year or two if it is kept dark. For flavor, a few months, even when you do everything right.

Storage conditionWhat the research foundSource
Dark, room temperatureReasonably stable for 1 to 2 yearsFairbairn et al., 1976
Dark, 25°C (77°F)THCA down about a third after one yearMilay et al., 2020
Constant light, 22°C (72°F)Steady THC loss to CBN; near total by year four in the worst conditionsZamengo et al., 2019
Dark, 4°C (39°F)Best overall for cannabinoids and terpenesMilay et al., 2020
Every condition testedTerpenes down by more than half on average within four monthsMilay et al., 2020

That last row matters most to vapers. Even sealed, dark and cold, terpenes fade fast, so buy what you will use in one to three months, date the jar, and use the oldest first. Old flower that stayed dry and clean isn't dangerous. It's weaker, carries more CBN, and tastes flat.

How to Store Weed Without Smell

A good jar holds smell. When it doesn't, the culprit is usually resin and crumbs on the rim or seal, so wipe both with a little isopropyl alcohol and replace a gasket that has gone hard. Beyond that:

  • Seal the grinder and the device too
A grinder smells as strong as the flower in it, and a vaporizer lingers after a session (our guide to whether dry herb vaporizers smell covers the device side).
  • Use a carbon-lined case for the whole kit
Stashlogix builds activated carbon fabric into its cases, which suits a jar, grinder and vaporizer stored together.

For trips, see our guide to traveling with your vaporizer. A smell-proof jar is about housemates and neighbors. It doesn't change what is legal where you are.

Store AVB and Kief Separately

Already vaped bud gets its own jar and never a humidity pack. Let it cool and dry completely before sealing, because damp AVB molds; our guide to what to do with already vaped bud covers the rest. Kief from your grinder deserves its own small glass jar, kept cool and dark like flower.

How to Tell If Your Weed Has Gone Bad

What you noticeWhat it meansWhat to do
Faint smell, crumbles to powder, harsh thin vaporOver-dry and staleRehydrate with a humidity pack; some flavor is gone for good
Spongy buds, stems bend instead of snapping, a damp, grassy smellToo moistOpen the jar for an hour, then store with a 58% pack and check daily
White or gray fuzz, cobweb strands, powdery patches, dark spotsMoldThrow it out, and clean the jar before reusing it
Looks and feels fine but smells of very littleOldStill usable; expect less flavor and a mellower effect

Trichomes glisten, cover the bud evenly and look like tiny mushrooms under a loupe. Mold looks dull, fuzzy or web-like, often sits in patches deep inside dense buds, and usually smells musty, like a damp basement. Break a large bud open if you are unsure.

Warning: Don't vape moldy flower, and don't count on a vaporizer's heat to make it safe. Ruchlemer and colleagues (2015) point out that molds on cannabis carry a risk of lung infection when inhaled, particularly for people with weakened immune systems. This is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to store weed in glass or plastic?

Glass, in an airtight jar your flower nearly fills. It's inert, holds smell well and is easy to clean. Thick vacuum-lid containers like TightVac work too, but thin plastic bags let odor through, block no light and crush buds.

Should you keep weed in the fridge?

Only in an airtight jar you rarely open, and only if you let the jar warm to room temperature before opening it. For the jar you use every day, a cool, dark cupboard is better, because condensation and food smells are bigger risks than a few degrees of warmth.

How long does weed stay fresh in a mason jar?

Kept dark with a humidity pack, flower vapes well for a few months and keeps most of its potency for a year or more. Terpenes fade first, so finish a jar within about three months if flavor matters to you.

How do you store weed long term?

Whole buds in a jar they nearly fill, a 62% humidity pack, a cool dark spot, and the date on the lid. For holds of many months, a sealed jar in the fridge or freezer protects potency, as long as you never open it cold or handle the buds frozen.

Can old weed make you sick?

Old flower that stayed dry and clean is weaker, not dangerous. Moldy flower is different: throw it out rather than vaping it.
