Tempest 2

Residue on the Tempest 2 gathers in three places: the bowl screen and the inner walls of the titanium bowl, the cooling spiral under the mouthpiece, and the threads between bowl and cap. The cap's steel outer layer instead picks up torch discolouration and skin oil that bakes on, which is why Mad Heaters says to keep fingers off it.

1. Quick clean every 30 bowls. Spray isopropyl onto the cooling spiral with a paper towel underneath, then twist it off and back on a couple of times. Run an IPA soaked Q-tip down the inside of the stem and push the bowl screen out from below. Finish the mouthpiece, the outside of the bowl and its inner walls with a water based wet wipe.

2. Deep clean every 100 bowls, and before the first one. Unlike the original, whose manual keeps the cap out of the soak, the whole assembled Tempest 2 goes in, everything but a wood heat shield, for at least 30 minutes in 99% isopropyl inside a zip-lock bag, shaken periodically. Drain, rinse in the bag with warm water, then soak briefly in fresh IPA.

3. Dry it with heat, not patience. Split the device, take the bowl screen out, rinse under warm running water and blow through the cap. Wipe, reassemble, then heat an empty bowl once with a torch or induction heater; the cap sizzles as trapped liquid leaves. Click discs, spring and balls can stay inside during the soak, so standing moisture is the hazard, not the alcohol.

4. Leave the o-rings dry. They are FKM and tolerate isopropyl, but the bowl o-rings should stay mostly dry, with at most the faintest trace of wax. Rotate the bowl while pushing it onto the stem so the rings are not dragged. Four spares ship in the box, three 6x1 and one 8x1.

5. Flatten every screen before refitting. Two bowl screens and two ball screens are included. The bowl screen sets capacity to 0.6, 0.9 or 1.2cc and seats with the supplied tube or bowl screen tool. A bent screen will not tighten and can work loose inside the bowl or cap. The revised ball screen twists to lock: ears into the rail, arrow or F forward, then about 20 degrees until it clicks.

6. Balls at 300 bowls. Tip the zirconia balls into a mesh tea strainer and torch them clean, or leave them overnight in concentrated liquid sugar soap and shake. Glass balls should not see extreme heat.

Dulled steel and titanium come back with an hour or two in 5% white vinegar, rinsed and dried at once. Keep the cap screw finger tight, since the cooling unit bends under force.
